Blame the Six

blame the six

The city keeps me awake.

I blame The Six for my insomnia.

I’ve managed to push all thoughts of past lovers, past mistakes, and future fortunes to the back of my mind.

I’ve learned not to think of anyone before I fall asleep and first thing when I wake up. Until I know someone is thinking of me, that’s the way it will stay.

So no, I’m not kept awake by anything but the city. The tower sees everything. It illuminates shadowed alleys and crowded corners.

The colours are always changing and flashing consistently reminding me of a casino’s lights.

(The house always wins)

It reminds me of the green light in The Great Gatsby, of the kingdom beyond the wall.

It humbles me.

No matter the level of success, the amount of money, the level of power one has in this city, we all see the same tower and it sees all of us.

We’re all equal and dwarfed by its height.

It sees into your Fort York condo, your College Street rental and your Liberty Village loft.

It knows who you are, but do you?
